The President of CCDR Norte and Chair of the Managing Authority of Interreg Atlantic Area, António Cunha, opens the 2025 Annual Conference of Regional Studies Association (RSA). The event is hosted by the University of Porto – School of Economics and Management, from 6th to 9th of May, under the theme of ‘Navigating Regional Transformation’.

This four-day international conference brings together academics, policymakers, and programme authorities from around 55 global territories to share research and policy insights on regional development and territorial cohesion. With over 750 presentations, high-level plenary sessions, workshops, and networking events in the city of Porto, Portugal.

Participants will explore how different regions are adapting in a rapidly changing context marked by geopolitical instability, digital disruption, climate urgency, and social inequalities. A strong emphasis will be placed on the importance of shared knowledge and collaboration among stakeholders. The aim is to encourage regions not only to adapt but also to take the lead in shaping their futures.

Themes directly relevant to the Interreg community include cross-border cooperation, sustainable and inclusive growth, regional disparities, EU cohesion policy, innovation ecosystems, the role of peripheral and remote regions, and transitions toward climate-neutral and digital economies.

The conference's collaborative format aligns well with the Interreg Atlantic Area's commitment to supporting territorial and regional cooperation. The participation of Interreg stakeholders will further strengthen ties between academic research and EU-funded programmes, for future synergies and projects.
