A new report by Eurobarometer reveals that 58% of Europeans eat fish or aquaculture products at home at least once a month. The survey reflects a decline in overall consumption frequency since the last one shared in 2021. The trend is the same for the Member States covered by the Interreg Atlantic Area, except Spain. However, the average numbers in all four countries are still higher than the European average.

According to the survey, 88% of the Spanish confirm they eat fish or aquaculture products at least once a month. This is followed by the Portuguese (80%), the French (66%) and the Irish (62%).

The survey also included a question on the main reason why Europeans have not eaten seaweed or algae products more frequently in the last 12 months. 54% of Europeans answered they are not used to consume these products. In the Interreg Atlantic Area, the Portuguese have the highest score (78%), followed by the French (62%), Spanish (54%) and Irish (39%).

The Interreg Atlantic Area programme is supporting a series of projects to boost the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Find out more on their intentions.
