The European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions proposed the theme “Empowering Communities” for the next European Week of Regions and Cities, the biggest annual event dedicated to cohesion policy, taking place in Brussels 7-10 October 2024. It has grown to become a neutral platform to discuss common challenges for Europe's regions and cities, as well as Interreg issues, by bringing together a diverse community of speakers and participants.
The programme of the 22nd edition presents over 100 sessions, including EU sessions, political workshops, participatory labs and brief innovative formats. The consultation on the future of cohesion policy with a focus on the cooperation between European regions will also be debated on a stand-by Interact programme from 8 to 10 October, at the Exhibition area of Albert Borschette Conference Centre. Building strong maritime cooperation and making Europe's democracy stronger are other priority themes of the programme.
During European Week it will be announced the winners of the Regiostars competition, a yearly award organised by DG REGIO since 2008 to demonstrate the impact and inclusiveness of regional development through EU-funded projects. An independent jury of academics had already selected up to 5 finalists per category and there are some Interreg inspired stories to share on this final list. The public vote will begin on 2 September on the REGIOSTARS website.
