AQUAFISH 0.0 is taking a bold step toward sustainable aquaculture with an innovative project on sea cucumbers farming. The sea cucumber is a delicacy used in Asian food, a raw material for traditional Chinese medicine and even an important part of the marine ecosystem. However, its high demand is jeopardising the disappearance of the species. AQUAFISH 0.0 aims to replicate the natural habitat of sea cucumbers in earthen ponds while ensuring commercial viability.

After successful laboratory trials to optimise cultivation methods, the project has launched real-world tests to cultivate sea cucumber species in two distinct cultivation locations in Cádiz, Spain. These trials will examine environmental factors, particularly pond depth, to determine the best conditions for large-scale production.

Supported by Interreg Atlantic Area, AQUAFISH 0.0 represents an international partnership committed to producing marine food in an innovative and sustainable way. Partners also want to make sure people understand how important it is to use food wisely and not waste it. They follow a 'zero waste' idea and focus on making food that's good for us.
