iFADO started its activities in November in Lisbon, Portugal
The iFADO project is committed with the creation of new marine services to support the Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation
Since November 2017, the Atlantic Area project iFADO (Innovation in the Framework of the Atlantic Deep Ocean) is working on the creation of marine services at regional and subregional scale using the EU Atlantic Waters as a case study. By filling current technical gaps, iFADO will use the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) implementation to demonstrate the application of innovative products. The project will combine traditional monitoring with cost-effective, state-of-the-art technologies: remote sensing, numerical modeling and emerging observation platforms such us gliders and oceanic buoys.
The iFADO project is funded by the European Interreg Atlantic Area program in its first call, under the priority 1 "Innovation and Competitiveness". The project kick-off meeting was held on 14th-15th November 2017 in the congress center of the Instituto Superior Técnico - the University of Lisbon, institution that leads the project, with the presentation by the partners of all work-packages. Comprising 20 partners from Portugal, Spain, France, United Kingdom and Ireland, the consortium will strengthen the transfer of innovation results to facilitate the emergence of new products, services, and processes. The project has an expected duration of 48 months and a total budget of 3,6M€.
Expectations are high among stakeholders regarding the project’s long-term potential effects, for improving the European capacity to export services worldwide using this as a demonstration case study, thus contributing to the economy of the Atlantic Region, the success of Copernicus Programme and the European Space Strategy. The iFADO project shall also create synergies amongst the different scientific community and the competent authorities, by enhancing the incorporation of scientific and technological developments in the research, development and management policies.
