International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory presents Atlantic Area project NANOCULTURE

The project studies the presence of nanoparticles in aquatic ecosystems in the Atlantic Area

The impact and scope of the new Atlantic Area-funded project NANOCULTURE will be presented to the public in Braga on May 20^th by project lead partner International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory.

NANOCULTURE focuses on risk and safety challenges of engineered nanoparticles, which have recently become very common thanks to their widespread industrial applications. However, the use of nanoparticles has been spreading at a much faster rate than the research on their possible adverse effects.

This will be the focus of NANOCULTURE, which will act on three main fronts to close this research gap:

• Assess the presence, accumulation and transformation of nanoparticles in Atlantic Area aquaculture products,
• Evaluate the human risk of exposure posed by the presence of nanoparticles,
• Develop sensors for the rapid identification of nanoparticles in aquaculture facilities.

The project will focus on Atlantic aquaculture, a fast-growing sector of high economic relevance in the region, and will specifically target organisms destined for human consumption.

The goal of the project is to promote sustainable development of the aquaculture sector and to establish effective regulations supporting a safe and non-toxic use of nanoparticles.
